Mori Building Co., Ltd. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Minoru Mori) has introduced automated external defibrillators (hereinafter referred to as "AED"), which is a life-saving device used for treatment of sudden cardiac arrest victims, in its large facilities, including Roppongi Hills.
Ventricular fibrillation (Note 1) is said to be the major cause of sudden cardiac death, and an AED is a simple, life-saving device that can deliver electrical defibrillation (Note 2), which is regarded as the most effective method for treating ventricular fibrillation. In the United States, AEDs are widely introduced both in public and private facilities. In Japan, they have been primarily introduced into public facilities since the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for the first time approved the use of AEDs by non-medical personnel (ordinary citizens) in July 2004.
We have already introduced AEDs designated for exclusive use by medical professionals in the clinic (for exclusive use of residents) in Atago Forest Tower, a residential building in Atago Green Hills, which was completed in 2001. Recently, we have placed a total of 14 AEDs in our large commercial and residential facilities used by many people, including Roppongi Hills and Ark Hills.
[Facilities in which AEDs have been installed]
Roppongi Hills, Ark Hills, Atago Green Hills, Moto-azabu Hills, West Mall of Palette Town
It is important to provide proper treatment at an early stage to prevent sudden cardiac death caused by ventricular fibrillation and other causes. We have introduced AEDs, have encouraged our employees and facility staff to participate in a course (provided by the Tokyo Fire Department) on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and how to use AEDs, and have ensured that a nurse is available in Roppongi Hills. We intend to manage and operate safe facilities by establishing emergency support systems in hardware and software.
(Note 1) "Ventricular fibrillation" is a type of arrhythmia, which is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death. It is a condition in which the ventricles quiver and cannot pump blood to the brain and the body.
(Note 2) "Electrical defibrillation" is a procedure that restores a stable heart rhythm to cardiac muscle undergoing chaotic rhythm caused by ventricular fibrillation, through application of electric shock.
(Remarks) Overview of the equipment
Product name: LIFEPAK 500 Biphasic
Medical device approval number:21500BZY003010000
Importer & Distributor: Medtronic Japan Co., Ltd. Dealer: SECOM
This device automatically judges whether a cardiac arrest patient is suffering from ventricular fibrillation, based on the information obtained from the electrodes placed on the patientÕs chest, and delivers an electric shock to the patient only when it is judged to be necessary. Users are guided through each step by voice prompts and do not require in-depth knowledge. Since facility users and visitors can use it easily, it is effective in providing life-saving care at an earlier stage.
