Mori Building leverages the experience and expertise it has cultivated domestically through projects such as Roppongi Hills, Azabudai Hills, and Toranomon Hills to undertake diverse projects overseas, including urban development investments and consulting.
Taking on a wholly-owned mixed-use development challenge in Shanghai
We began construction on Shanghai Senmao International Building (now HSBC Tower), our first project in Shanghai, in 1995. The construction was completed in 1998. The tenants mainly consisted of Japanese financial institutions and trading companies, along with numerous European and American financial institutions. HSBC (the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Group), which holds a leading position among foreign financial institutions in Shanghai, established its China headquarters here, making the building widely known not only to Japanese companies but also to Western firms.
After overcoming subsequent challenges such as the Asian financial crisis, the Shanghai World Financial Center opened in 2008. We took on the challenge of a wholly-owned mixed-use development, crossing borders to realize Mori Building's vision for urban development as a comprehensive developer. We introduced town management for the first time in China and also contributed to the branding of the complex. The building has established a firm position as a Shanghai landmark and continues to evolve as a “global magnet” whose magnetism influences the future of China, Asia, and the world.
Business development spreads to Southeast Asia, Europe and America
In 2016, we established a local affiliate in Singapore to explore new business opportunities centering on rapidly growing Southeast Asian cities. In 2017, we decided to promote a project in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, as our first development initiative in Southeast Asia, and opened JAKARTA MORI TOWER in 2022. In recent years, we have been expanding our overseas operations, including acquiring a portion of the ownership interest in One Vanderbilt Avenue—a new landmark in New York City—from SL Green Realty Corp.,in 2024 through our U.S. subsidiary, Mori Building (U.S.A.) LLC.
