Magnetism of the City

Competition among International Cities Has Grown Worldwide

The world has entered the “age of the city.” Today over half the Earth’s population lives in cities. People cross borders to seek cities that have more to offer. Cities are places that bring out people’s potential. Cities with the magnetism to bring in people, goods, capital, and information inevitably grow stronger and stronger. As competition among international cities has intensified, more has come to be expected of cities’ capabilities. That is the age we live in.

A City’s Magnetism Is Its Global Power

We believe a city’s magnetism is based on its global power. This encompasses everything from the economy to R&D, cultural interaction, livability, environment, and accessibility. A city with all of these can attract people and companies and bring about innovation. The only way for Tokyo to come out on top in the intense competition between cities worldwide is to increase its strengths, overcome its weaknesses, and improve its global power.

According to the Global Power City Index (GPCI) released by the Mori Memorial Foundation, Tokyo ranks third after London and New York. If Tokyo, the capital of Japan, boosts its appeal and global presence, it will vitalize the entire country. Mori Building carries out urban development considering the results of analyzing six functions that comprise cities’ global power (economy, R&D, cultural interaction, livability, environment, and accessibility).

Increasing Tokyo’s Magnetism to Make It the Best City in the World

Although Tokyo boasts among the world’s best in R&D, cultural interaction, livability, environment, and accessibility, it has seen a relative decline in its economy. However, we believe that Tokyo still has great potential. The recent increase of visitors to Japan has resulted in spreading the city’s appeal, and its international recognition as a city of refined culture has grown rapidly. We believe that Tokyo can become the best city in the world if it increases its global power and attracts diverse talent while maintaining its unique strengths. This belief is more than just a dream. To make this a reality, Mori Building will increase Tokyo’s magnetism from the heart of the city in collaboration with the government, other developers, academic institutions, investors, and others. We believe this will build the future of the international city of Tokyo and drive the growth of Japan.
